Storywurx

I first encountered Micheal Fry and the Storywurx program at a graduation for a former school. The graduates in the program were some of the most disengaged and disconnected students the year before, and here they were receiving multiple awards and walking across the stage to receive diplomas. I was so impressed with the videos and Mr. Fry that I had to have him bring Storywurx to my new school. In the three years since, he and his team have engaged students in deep Social and Emotional learning, focusing on self-awareness, social responsibility, and responsible decision making. Students dealing with trauma and mental health concerns have become very vulnerable in examining themselves and some of the issues they face in their communities, creating videos from research and personal experiences in order to affect positive change in the world. The personal growth of these students is apparent and measurable. Students in the Storywurx program had a credit attainment rate of 97% (compared to 62% for the school at large), and they raised both their reading and math scores by over 3 years (compared to 1.6 and 1.7 year gains, respectively). In 28 years working in schools I have never seen a program that is as impactful and inspiring as Mr. Fry’s Storywurx. 

Emmett Till elementary school has had great success working with Storywurx organization. The partnership included social, emotional wellness and movement for our youngest learners. Our students are more centered and focused in their learning as a result of their time with this organization. This is a great partnership for wellness and overall stakeholder engagement and success.
